About

Faced with the announcement of a serious illness, faced with the treatments that one or a loved one must undergo, throughout the evolution of a cancer, you may need to feel supported, listened to, and helped. Our department is here for the patients and their relatives.

Come to see us.

The Department

Our psychologists play a multifaceted role in our institution. We are here to understand and support patients and their families through the difficulties of their medical journey. We also recognize the impact cancer, chronic diseases and other diseases can have on those who are caring for our patients, including our doctors, nurses, and other members of our team.

In addition, our psychologists identify the dysfunctions or oversights that can occur on an institutional level. These include helping our staff navigate the way the different groups of our hospital relate to one another, managing staff needs, the way families are treated and attended to, and the psychological impact that economic, political and health factors can have on the way patients are cared for.

Finally, we support the groups, to help them investigate the sources of any difficulties they face and to talk about all the findings through the analysis of the professional practices of each department: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, intensive care and ward, etc.

Services

The Department of Clinical Psychology offers different services to diagnose, treat, and support our patients and their families. We offer both speech and art therapy treatment options and recommend what we believe is most suitable for each patient. We also support employees, analyzing their work practices, encouraging them throughout their professional training and clinical research, their participation in international projects and in interdisciplinary collaborations related to health care systems, psychosocial relations, and patient care.

Equipment

Psychotherapeutic and supporting activities by our department are carried out in different areas of the hospital. These include our offices, the chemotherapy area, the radiotherapy area, the dialysis area, the inpatient area, and more. We believe in supporting our patients where they are and where they need us the most, so we are not limited to a single location.

Research

The research part of the Department of Clinical Psychology is concerned with:

1. The way our patients feel about their sexuality. This area focuses on patients who have undergone any treatments that can affect their sexual function and their self-image, including their sense of femininity and masculinity, and their sexual identity. We work with our patients to improve their sense of self and of their sexuality, focusing on how they relate to their partners, and on finding supportive, practical solutions to any issues that may arise.
2. The growth and recognition of patient advocacy as a branch of science.
We focus on researching ways to protect patients' rights in the hospital setting and to guarantee personalized, quality social and medical services. This is a pioneering movement which relates to a professional status quo that has not yet been institutionalized in Cyprus.
3. The palliative care of terminally ill patients. We are exploring three working hypotheses, which investigate:
• The subjective experience patients have of their palliative care (information, mental and physical relief, satisfaction of their spiritual needs),
• The care of families (sharing unfavorable news, company and support at the end of the relative's life, end-of-life rituals, help in managing bereavement),
• The care of medical and nursing staff (supervision, training, institutional support at the psychological and material level).
The topic of palliative care is innovative for Cypriot standards and can be explored in cooperation with different research institutions.
