Medical Physics
About
The relationship between physics and medicine is over 2000 years old, with Hippocrates (460-377 BC) making patient temperature measurements by applying a soaked cloth on the patient’s skin and observing the rate of drying. Today, 20,000 medical physicists worldwide ensure high quality radiation therapies, optimise image quality and dose in diagnostic scans, and ensure radiation protection is observed for all patients, staff and the public. At the German Medical Institute (GMI), we not only observe the highest standards of UK, European or US protocols, but are also innovators that contribute to new levels of care.
The Department
The Department of Medical Physics provides services to the Radiation Oncology, Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine departments, by combining the principles of physics and engineering with those of biology and medicine. Working in collaboration with physicians from these disciplines, we help to provide research-driven, safe and accurate patient diagnoses and treatments.
Team
Our team has extensive expertise and are leaders in our profession, with participants in IPEM, ESTRO, EFOMP, ICRP and EANM working groups. Following years of excellence and hard work, the Department of Medical Physics has secured the GMI numerous distinctions: an Elekta Reference Site; a Centre of Excellence for RTSafe; a Reference Site for Sun Nuclear; and a QIBA and EARL Centre of Excellence. Although still in its infancy, the Medical Physics Department of GMI has demonstrated a research focus, producing innovative research papers, conference abstracts and delivering numerous talks and webinars (both nationally and internationally).
Education
As well as ensuring patient treatments and diagnoses are optimal through frequent machine quality assurance and conformance to international protocols, we take an active role in ensuring radiation protection is observed for both staff and the public. The Department of Medical Physics delivers frequent education to all GMI staff members and satisfies all requirements of national and international legislation regarding radiation protection.
