Oral, Maxillofacial and Head/Neck

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial / Head & Neck Surgery is led by Professor Panayiotis Kyzas.

Professor Panayiotis Kyzas is a world-renowned Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial / Head & Neck Surgeon. He specialises in Head and Neck Oncological Surgery (ablation and reconstruction), laser surgery, facial aesthetics, facial trauma, and salivary gland disease, and has a particular interest and case-portfolio for 3D printer – guided, patient specific, personalised surgery (PSP). He has relocated to Cyprus from the UK.

The specialty of OMFS/H&N Surgery has an extremely broad spectrum, covering conditions of the face, mouth, jaws, throat and neck. Professor Kyzas and the team offer treatment to patients with facial skin cancer, oral and maxillofacial trauma, dentoalveolar surgery (wisdom teeth, dental implants), orthognathic surgery, salivary gland diseases, facial cosmetic surgery, surgery of the temporomandibular joint, thyroid surgery and anything else within the broad spectrum of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Professor Kyzas’s experience in any OMFS/H&N condition is vast. He has performed many thousands of surgical procedures, including >850 microvascular free flaps – the gold standard and “state of the art” technique in H&N reconstruction.

The department aims to become the first H&N Department in Cyprus with consolidated clinical research. This will heavily rely on Professor Kyzas’s long history of involvement in medical research. In 2007 he has completed his PhD thesis which has resulted in several highly cited publications in some of the most prestigious medical journals. He has participated in international collaborations for the improvement of medical research ( and some of his papers have had a significant impact in improving research methodology. He has given several invited international lectures, and he has presented in national and international conferences. He has published over 70 papers in prestigious scientific journals and his research has received > 6000 citations. Professor Kyzas is the Chief Investigator of the MANTRA trial, a UK multicentre RCT with multimillion pounds NIHR funding, launched in July 2023. This is the biggest randomised controlled trial ever to be performed in the specialty of OMFS.

As a result of his outstanding clinical and research/academic achievements, Professor Kyzas has been appointed as a Professor in OMFS H&N Surgery at Edge Hill University

In 2018 Professor Kyzas was elected as the Deputy Editor for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS). In January 2024, Professor Kyzas started his role as Editor in Chief for the BJOMS. This is the first time that a Greek Cypriot has ever been chosen for this highly prestigious role. Professor Kyzas sits in the council of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS).

The OMFS/H&N department puts patient safety, clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction in the centre of everything we do. We listen to patient concerns and offer advice and medical reports on any case that falls within the field of expertise. Professor Kyzas is a fully accredited medical expert witness and has provided hundreds of medical expert negligence reports (πραγματογνώμονας).
