About

Dr. Iakovos Georgiou welcomes you to the website of the GMI’s Department of Plastic Surgery, where we aim to offer each patient personalized care and treatment which is tailored to his or her specific needs.

The Department

The German Medical Institute is well-renowned in Cyprus and abroad for its state-of-the-art equipment and excellent patient care. The GMI plastic surgery team can offers expert treatment, focusing on reconstructive, lipedema, and aesthetic surgery.

The term "Plastic Surgery" originates from the Greek language and means to sculpt and to model. The history of plastic surgery goes back thousands of years. Throughout this time, plastic surgery has evolved to sophisticated procedures with the aim of restoring, rejuvenating, and enhancing patients’ function and appearance through surgical techniques. It is divided into two main areas: reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.

The aim of reconstructive surgery it to correct the form and function of a part of the body after cancer, burns, traumatic injuries, as well as congenital abnormalities. Although the plastic surgery team at the GMI offers procedures on the entire body surface, a focus area is breast reconstruction after cancer. In close collaboration with the surgical oncologists of the GMI, and after the surgical treatment of the tumor, the plastic surgery team can offer the patient reconstruction of the breast using silicone implants or the patient’s own tissue. Which method is most appropriate for each case depends on several factors – as well as the patient’s wishes – and is thoroughly discussed with the patient beforehand. This way, the GMI can offer all services to patients dealing with breast cancer – from diagnosis to treatment and finally to reconstruction – all under one roof.

The team also offers procedures for breast surgery in cases where the patient is simply not happy with the form or size of their breasts. These may include a breast augmentation with implants or fat grafting, a breast lift in the case of sagging (for example after pregnancy or weight-loss), or breast reduction in cases where the large size of the breasts becomes problematic. Male patients with excessive breast growth – so-called gynaecomastia – can also be treated with the most modern techniques.

Another important focus area for the plastic surgery team is the diagnosis and surgical treatment of lipedema – a disease that almost exclusively affects women. It leads to a painful and progressive increase of fat tissue in the lower and sometimes even in the upper extremities, disproportionately to the rest of the body. The disease can lead to a substantial impairment in mobility, decreased quality of life as well as a marked dissatisfaction for the patient with their appearance. Through functional, lymph-sparing liposuction, a substantial decrease in the subcutaneous tissue, as well as improvement of symptoms, can be achieved. The primary goal of the treatment is pain and symptom reduction, and an improvement in the patient’s satisfaction with their appearance.
