Nikolaos Zamboglou

Prof. Nikolaos Zamboglou was born in Limassol in 1949 where he finished school. After having received a DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) scholarship, he studied Physics at the Technical University of Aachen and received his degree Dipl. Phys. (MSc) in 1974.

From 1974 – 1977 he conducted his graduate thesis and received the degree Dr.rer.nat. (PhD in Physics) at the Department of Nuclear Research KFA Julich at the University of Dusseldorf after being granted a KFA scholarship.

1979 - 1985: Medical studies at the Medical School of the University of Essen

1985: Degree MD. during the same period of time he was research fellow at the Institute of Radiobiology and Medical Physics at the University of Essen.

1985 - 1986: Resident in Radiation – Oncology at the Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen.

1986 - 1989: Completion of his residency program in Radiation – Oncology at the University Hospital Dusseldorf, Germany.

1987: Doctoral degree Dr. med (PhD in Medicine) from the Medical School of the University of Essen.

1989: Associated Professor in Radiation Oncology (Priv. Doz.) University of Dusseldorf

1990 - 1992: Senior attending physician at the Department of Radiation Oncology of the University of Dusseldorf.

1992 - 2016: Head of Department and Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology of the Offenbach Hospital, Teaching Hospital of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt.

1993: Adjunct Research Professor at the National Technical University of Athens at the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems.

2000 - 2016: Head of the Oncology Center Offenbach

2001 – 2007: Member of the Board Directors of the German Society of Radiation Oncology (DEGRO).

2003 – 2005: President of the German Society of Radiation Oncology (DEGRO)

2016: Honorary Doctor at the Cyprus University of Technology

2017: Founder and Medical Director of German Oncology Center, Limassol, Cyprus

2018: Professor of Oncology at European University of Cyprus

Prof. Zamboglou has contributed publications in renowned German and international scientific journals with approximately 1.200 citations. His academic work also includes the editing and authorship of 7 books and 23 book – chapters Oncology.

During the 70’s in his capacity as a physicist at the KFA Julich (Centre for Nuclear Research Julich) and the Institute of Medical Physics and Radiation of the University of Essen, he focused his work on the topic of biological dosimetry. In the 80’s he also expanded his research activities on the field of simultaneous radio – chemotherapy and implemented the results of his work on translational research at the University Hospital of Dusseldorf.

As Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Offenbach Hospital in 1992, he focused on clinical and technological studies in interventional radiotherapy – brachytherapy.

His collaboration with Prof. N. Uzunoglou from the National Technical University of Athens, Prof. G. Sakas from the Technical University of Darmstadt and Prof. D. Baltas in Medical Physics has profoundly contributed to scientific developments in the field on brachytherapy.

Over the past years, Mr Zamboglou and his research team have managed to expand the spectrum of treatment indications for interventional radiotherapy. The advances of image guidance and individualised dose shaping, enables accurate and effective application of interstitial brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate and breast cancer, sarcomas and also for brain tumor and soft tissue recurrences.

Especially in the curative treatment of prostate cancer, brachytherapy yields the same therapeutic results with radical surgery. Moreover, with Brachythderapy, the percentage of treatment related urinary incontinence is very low, almost insignificant and the percentage of patients with preserved erectile function exceeds 80%.

Through progresses in the optimisation of dose distribution and advanced methods of virtual treatment simulation, Professor Zamboglou has offered advanced interventional radiotherapeutical treatment to more that 15.000 patients. He trained physicians from more than 120 international medical institutions worldwide, including 10 centres in Greece, in applying his brachytherapy method.

Professor Zamboglou’s research focuses primarily on the field of image guided three-dimensional treatment planning with geometry-oriented optimisation of dose distribution. His work consists of physical, biomedical and technological research activities and has introduced advanced biomedical imaging techniques.
